Brewing Mediterranean coffee isn’t just about caffeine—it’s a tradition, an experience, and a flavor ritual passed down through generations. Whether you know it as Turkish coffee, Greek coffee, Armenian coffee, or Lebanese coffee, the Mediterranean method shares one thing in common: a small pot, finely ground beans, and rich, bold flavor with a creamy layer of foam on top. And with the right tools—like Sadaf’s Mediterranean coffee maker—you can master this time-honored brew from the comfort of your kitchen.
To make Mediterranean coffee the authentic way, you’ll need:
Mediterranean coffee pot (also called a cezve, briki, or rakweh) or Mediterranean Coffee Maker from Sadaf.
Finely ground coffee – ideally Sadaf’s air-roasted ultra fine grind coffee
Cold water
Optional: sugar (to taste), spices, creamer
Use your coffee cup to measure. One cup = one serving. Pour the cold water directly into the coffee pot.
Use 1 to 1½ heaping teaspoons of finely ground coffee per serving. Do not stir yet.
If you want your coffee sweetened, add sugar now. Here are common sweetness levels:
Unsweetened (sada): no sugar
Medium (wasat): ½ tsp sugar per cup
Sweet (helou): 1–2 tsp sugar per cup
Now stir everything gently while the mixture is still cold to fully dissolve the coffee and sugar.
Place the pot on low heat. Do not stir again. Watch closely as the foam begins to form. Right before it starts to boil, remove it from the heat to avoid overflowing.
For extra foam, you can return the pot to heat 1–2 more times, removing just before boiling each time. This creates a rich, creamy top layer.
Pour slowly into your coffee cup, allowing the foam to rise to the top. Serve immediately. Traditionally, coffee grounds settle at the bottom—don’t drink them.
Use the right grind: Mediterranean coffee requires a powder-like grind—finer than espresso.
Don’t rush the heat: Low and slow brings out the boldness without burning.
Let it settle: After pouring, wait a few seconds for the grounds to settle before sipping.
Serve with tradition: A glass of cold water and a sweet treat (like dates or Turkish delight) make it a full experience.
